Locals in Ridgefield know the address well. For years, it was known as The Ancient Mariner. But what chef and owner Shannon Sturz has created with The Mariner Tavern goes well beyond a basic refresh.
Sturz brings serious culinary pedigree to the kitchen, having previously served as sous chef at The Inn at Pound Ridge and executive chef at Seamore’s in Darien. That experience shows up immediately in the food. The menu works across the board, balancing refined technique with the comfortable, welcoming identity of a neighborhood tavern.
The long bar is often crowded, especially when sports are on the screens. We also loved the kitschy animations of famous paintings displayed above diners' heads, adding an unpretentious, fun personality to the space.
What We Ordered
Calamari: Light and fresh, paired with a spicy sauce that gives it the right amount of kick.
Butternut Squash Soup: Beautiful presentation that won our palate from the very first spoonful.
Fish and Chips: We loved the thin shoestring frites. While the portion leans refined, the cod was exceptionally light and never greasy.
Kale Salad with Chicken: Venture a little further afield on the menu for this one. Tossed with apples, candied pistachios, and a cherry mustard dressing, it really worked.
Sticky Toffee Pudding: A rich, comforting, and perfect conclusion to the meal.
The Mariner Tavern is only going to get more popular as word spreads, and depending on the season, louder when the bar is drawing sports fans. Whether you are sitting down for a full dinner or grabbing a stool for drinks and a bite, it is a fantastic addition to the local circuit.
